When you listen to your parents, and possibly even your grandparents, talk about their honeymoons, there is a good chance you will hear stories of the Pocono’s or the Catskills. Both had become clichés for honeymoons of the 1940’s, ‘50’s and 60’s. However, modernization, renovations and new investment have brought the two regions into the 21st century as a prime destination wedding and honeymoon location. The natural beauty of both regions provides the backdrop for summer and winter activities, and offers a relaxed, romantic escape for the newlyweds.

Poconos History
Pocono is a Native American word meaning “stream between two mountains.” The Delaware Water Gap is the true namesake, for the Delaware River cut a gap between two mountains and formed what is now known as the “Gateway to the Pocono Mountains.”

The scenic Delaware Water Gap encompasses over 67,000 acres, 100 miles of trails (including 27 miles of the Appalachian Trail) and 40 miles of easy-paddling river in PA and NJ: Dingmans Falls PA

WHAT TO DO
:
The Pocono Mountains are considered the southernmost extension of the Catskills of New York, but the region’s popularity as a vacation destination has given the region its own identity. Encompassing four counties and parts of three others, the Pocono’s provide a 2,400-square-mile area in stunning north-eastern Pennsylvania. With no major population centers the region is able to maintain a rural atmosphere, where small towns, farms, covered bridges, the Delaware State Forest, six designated natural areas, seven state parks and one national park preserve the wilderness.

The rivers and lakes of the area provide extensive water sport activities, primarily canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting, and fishing on the larger lakes that are able to accommodate speed boats. The Pocono Raceway at Long Pond hosts two NASCAR races in June and August.

Monroe County received approval to build a 5,000 slot machine casino at the former Mount Airy Lodge in Paradise Township with the first stage of construction due to complete in late 2007. Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, camping, horseback riding, and golf. Fall includes all of summer’s activities with the gorgeous autumn colors and also migratory bird
watching.

Winter is just as busy as summer with story-book snow-scapes as a backdrop for skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, snowshoeing and eagle watching.

In between the resort and the bed & breakfast is the hotel and lodge and at Crescent Lodge and Country Inn you will find what the Pocono’s were once famous for--the guest cottage. Here also is a perfect opportunity for wedding and honeymoon plans to coalesce, with special event facilities located in the lodge and romantic seclusion for the Bride and Groom in one of the Jacuzzi guest cottages. In the Catskills
The sister to our classic honeymoon
destination is New York State’s famous Catskill Mountains. Long a retreat enjoyed. by New York City’s elite and artistic, the Catskills became famous in the early to mid-twentieth century, and offer numerous resorts, inns and vacation locations. Many musicians and entertainers got their start in show business working the venues created by vacation destinations in the Catskills. Since the Catskills are not technically a mountain range there is no clear cut beginning or end, just a general acceptance that it encompasses six counties 90-200 miles north of New York City. “When you have two rocks for every dirt, you are in the Catskills,” is the local adage. When you don’t have enough hours in the day or days of vacation to see everything, you’re also in the Catskills.

Having the same terrain as the Pocono’s, similar activities are hosted with downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and snowmobiling topping the winter sports and golf, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, water sports and river cruises on the Hudson River in the warmer months. The fall is popular for the explosion of color; spring is the only season to plan around since it is basically mud season. The Catskills reflect the influence of New York City and the flavor of some of the resorts and Inns. One in particular is Kate’s Lazy Meadow, purchased and renovated by Kate Piersonb of the B-52’s to return to the classic heyday of the region in the 1950’s.

Emerson Resort and Spa at Mount Tremper in the Hudson Valley has wedding facilities for large and small affairs. The region around Emerson Resort includes winter and summer outdoor activities but with the arts and entertainment center of New York close by there are outdoor concerts, the Woodstock Playhouse, and the Woodstock Film Festival in the fall with appearances by notable directors and actors.

For the full service resort there is the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa. Boasting wedding facilities for intimate to grand scale with exterior and ballroom, they also host an in-house party planner. Kaatskill Mountain Club is another large resort with exceptional wedding facilities that take full advantage of the local beauty to enhance your most important day.

The Catskills and the Poconos are rebounding into the 21st century waiting for you to discover the picturesque beauty and fun demanded by the modern traveler.
